[Portraits of the Vietnamese ambassadors to France]. 1863.

In these two portraits Phan Thanh Giản, First Ambassador to France, and Second Ambassador Pham Phú Thứ are attired in formal court robes and hold jade tablets, symbols of their role as representatives of the Vietnamese emperor Tự Đức.

Jacques-Philippe Potteau was a member of the anthropology department of the Museum d'histoire naturelle, Paris. In the 1850s the anthropology department began a project to photograph members of Asian diplomatic delegations visiting France. In 1862 Potteau succeeded Louis Rousseau as the departmental photographer. Potteau showed his work at the London Photography Exhibit in 1862 and 1863, and the 1863 Paris International Photography Exhibit. From the description of [Portraits of the V...
